ADR Online - An AIAC Webinar Series : Enforcement Issues and the New York Convention: To March with the Status Quo or to Petition for Change?
Join us in our next webinar, titled “Enforcement Issues and the New York Convention: To March with the Status Quo or to Petition for Change?” on Thursday, 24th September 2020 at 7.00 p.m. MYT (GMT+8).
The Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards 1958 (the “New York Convention”) can be regarded as the life force of international arbitration. In the words of V.V. Veeder, the New York Convention is “a secular, sacred text of the greatest practical significance to every inhabitant of the 21st Century’s global village.” However, critics continue to regard it as too short and outdated. Additionally, in light of new technology, does this text need to be amended to reflect the current times. This webinar will analyse the enforcement issues faced by practitioners of international arbitration and the sufficiency of the New York Convention in addressing these hurdles. The expert panel will critically consider the possibility of amending the New York Convention in the wake of the growing usage of arbitration as a mode to resolve disputes and present views on whether it is beneficial to stick to the status quo or if it now time to demand change.
