The 5th AIAC [Virtual] Pre-Moot for Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot
KUALA LUMPUR, 9th MARCH 2021: The Asian International Arbitration Centre (“AIAC”) was proud to host 95 teams from 46 countries for the 5th AIAC [Virtual] Pre-Moot (“AIAC Pre-Moot”). In keeping with tradition, the curtain-raiser for the AIAC Pre-Moot was the AIAC Young Practitioners Group (YPG) Conference, titled “Exploring the New Frontier: The Modern Landscape of International Arbitration” on Wednesday, 3rd March 2021.
During the opening ceremony on Thursday, 4th March 2021, the Director of the AIAC, Tan Sri Datuk Suriyadi bin Halim Omar, stressed the vision of the AIAC Pre-Moot which echoed the goal of the Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot, namely being a valuable training opportunity for students to refine and enhance their advocacy skills. In keeping with the momentum and the AIAC’s commitment to this initiative, he also shared the AIAC’s success in securing the selection of the AIAC’s Arbitration Rules for the 29th Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot in Vienna, Austria, and the 19th Willem C. Vis East International Commercial Arbitration Moot in Hong Kong.
The strong participation during this year’s competition, as well as the dedication of over 220 arbitrators taking part in the competition and virtual social events, places the AIAC Pre-Moot in the running to be the largest Pre-Moot in the world.
After a fascinating Final Round against Dr. Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University, the University of Miami, School of Law was crowned the Champion of the 5th AIAC [Virtual] Pre-Moot 2021. The Royal Institute of Colombo and the National University of Singapore placed 3rd and 4th respectively, whilst the International Islamic University Malaysia edged Brickfields Asia College to emerge as the Winner of the Malaysian Final.
The AIAC Pre-Moot was also graced with the presence of Prof. Dr. Ingeborg Schwenzer, Dr. Christopher Boog, Tan Swee Im, Prof. Dr. Christopher Kee as arbitrators in the Final and Malaysian Final, which saw the Deputy Director of the AIAC, Datuk Dr. Prasad Sandosham Abraham serve as the presiding arbitrator for both the final rounds. The AIAC was also pleased to have the closing remarks delivered by the Director of the Willem C. Vis Vienna Arbitration Moot, Prof. Dr. Stefan Kröll.
The AIAC would like to congratulate the winners and all participants for their outstanding efforts and achievements, and looks forward to hosting the 6th AIAC Pre-Moot, hopefully once again at its iconic Bangunan Sulaiman in Kuala Lumpur.
